Fingernails ... scratch ... the ... paper

Fingernails scratch the paper,
They point at a blank page.
A voice says, "Write something!"
So, he writes: "Fingernails
scratch the paper,
They point to a blank page."

LOST LOVER

One too many bottles of wine
were opened
For I drank out of that last
final one
Hoping to see you in the sun
I saw only night
Hoping to make you happy
we both misunderstood
One too many late nights
I wrote too many poems
Said too many wrong words
used too much ink
I dropped the last straw
but that had to be
Hoping to see you again
I never will

LAKE ERIE AT SUNSET

June 1976, Ashtabula, Ohio

Green waves crash again and again
on the gray blocks of the breakwall,
A glowing orange sun sets in a hazy horizon,

An old man in a tattered suit fishes
for two hours with two rods outfitted
with two open-face spinning reels;

He caught two sheephead
with crippled worms on bent steel
and tonight it will be his meal.

"There's other fish to catch --" he says
sucking in breaths of the sea air,
"Perch, and salmon, and great ones!"

But he's only got the two fish
at the end of a drag line
floating in stagnant water.

His dirty fingernails and dusty boots
are lonely for the other hundred people
who usually fish here on the breakwall
at night.

"It's cold -- he says in a harmless
old man's dirge.
It's beautiful, I think in a silent gaze;
The waves, the lake that ends beyond
the wide, wide horizon;

It's breezy, with the wind ripping
through the checkered shirt
and the old man is tired.

The sudsy green waves crash against
the huge gray blocks of stone.
They did it today
They'll do it tomorrow…

Discarded beer and soda pop cans,
and green slimy driftwood
All in different stages of decomposition,

Rotting fish and crusty skeletons
decorate the shallow marsh
this side of the breakwall.

The sun has set, the light grows dim,
The old tanned leather-faced fisherman
takes in his lines and leaves.

It's not his life, this lake
but it make his day…

Young long-haired people in curtained vans
And young couples in love
swallow the crisp Lake Erie breezes
Listening in half-deafness
to the rush of the waves.

Great cargo ships as long as
skyscrapers are tall
Chug west on the flat greenness
of the lake;

A yellow Bug and an M&M green Datsun
Stand quiet in the gathering darkness
of the mellow night
So full and rich with the calmest
sounds of the sea.

ON TO EDGAR CAYCE

It was you caring and sharing a flake
of your life with me
sharing your work as well as your fun
sharing your joy as much as your confusion
It was your comforting, your chiding
you really cared, you put me first
when I came to your side
when I wanted just to be with you
I must have told you before
how good it felt listening
while you shared your wisdom
I know now I should have
You'll be married soon, to someone you love
And with those vows, I'll never see you again
you'll be a husband with a wife
a friend of mine a thousand miles away
And you being where you'll be
I doubt I'll see you much
but if anyone asks me who it was
it was you, brother, my friend

APOCALYPSE

Yes, I am
well, anyway, I used to be
that is, that was, before the rock sheet
wrapped in rolling pins
ruined my recollection
that is, of early childhood
but that's been done before
long before
Yes, I will be
if I've the half-chance to work
long and hard with my buddy who passes the
pen with the phosphorous ink
it glows with the harking angels
in the sun if a fat man's shadow
undresses slowly nearby
No, I'm not very sure
but if you say so, I'd believe you
that is, if you weren't lying through
you teeth, that is, if you never
lied to anyone before, but you've got a point
what is the use, to you or to me
of trying to tell the truth
from someone else?

PETER IV

I heard about your loveseat
And your near-new davenport
So why doncha write me a letter
Give it a try - be a sport
I figure that you're busy as a fever
And even teaching in a real school
So why doncha write me a letter
Tell me how it feels to break jewels
I heard you're going to Florida
New Hampshire, or even Vermont
So why doncha write me a letter
Tell me how it feels to have to want
I keep hearing about your Volkswagen
Black as a spade and sweet as a girl
So why doncha write me a letter
Tell me how to get around the world
I figure I can always trust you
Even if I never see you anymore
So why doncha write me a letter
Then deliver it to my door

THERE’S BEAUTY

There's beauty for you
beauty for me
There's a thousand miles
on the Erie track
So many men that used and
broke their backs
So many men all sang
the Railroad Blues
They said it drove the
pain away from you

POEMS

Poems are like homes
After a flood has struck;
Just a funeral - without a tear,
A display for sightseers,
A memory of an old time dear.
Poems are like rocks that rolled
Rumbling down a hill;
Nothing sacred to the ironic eye,
Hurting more than healing,
Showing a pain once alive.
Poems are like tears
Shed long ago in sadness
Painted on pages with life-like feelings
Bringing back those old growing pains,
At three a.m., an emotional drain.

HERE I AM

I'm waiting for the snow to fall
from an ulcer in the warehouse wall.
David saved Goliath from cutting his hair,
You came marching by with a polar bear.
I'm waiting for the moon to fall
behind the weary warehouse wall.
Matt threw the paper through the window,
You act innocent, as if you didn't know.

BOOK ON A SHELF

I'd hate to be
a book on a shelf
that's only been bought
but never had its back
broken
Yes, I'd hate to be
that book
sitting on the shelf
unloved
with all those other books
that have never been read
